Issue # 206 (10-12-2003)

Moving Day

On The Move...

You move your domain sometimes out of necessity, sometimes for financial reasons, and for a host of other reasons. Regardless of what you've been told, or what you've experienced ... it doesn't have to be a nightmare.

In the Crosshairs
I've been hard at work over the last 2 or 3 weeks, working on some fun new stuff for JimWorld, and for The Forums. Principally, with the sending of this issue of The Gazette, we're launching 3 brand new things that I'm sure you'll be interested in.

First, a new look for The Forums. As you head back to the forums today, you'll see a nifty new design. We've added some color, and a few things that people have been clamoring for: A separate "new post" and "reply" screen (along with the current "quick reply form". These new forms sport a wysiwyg editor, clickable smilies, and easier access to the formatting codes.

Secondly, I've made The Gazette a bit more "blog-like". You'll notice at the end of each article in this issue is a link. This link will take you to the online version of the article. You'll see that on that page, you'll be able to add your comments directly to the page. These comments are also linked into The Forums. Posts made from the gazette page, and frome the forums are seen in both places, so wherever the mood hits you to post, be our guest, we love the feedback.

Finally ... drumroll please ... meet "My Jimworld" at http://my.jimworld.com My JimWorld is an encapsulation of the major areas of JimWorld, in one easy to use screen. You can get to your inbox, your favorite forums, all of the topics that you've recently posted in, headline news (of your choosing), your own notepad, links to your favorite JimWorld (and other worldly) URLs. It's cool, it's totally yours ... make it your browsers home page, I did ;)

As always, we're open to your feedback!

Can I request a more universal date format? I still get confused with the old mm/dd/yyyy formatted dates which are the opposite way round to the old European dd/mm/yyyy date formats.

There is an internet standard (RFC 3339) based on ANSI X3.30 and ISO 8601 that uses YYYY-MM-DD instead. I am so used to seeing that big-Endian (largest first, like the Time) format in so many other places, that anything else has me stopping and thinking (Note yyyy-dd-mm is not used anywhere at all).

Can we have this on this forum, along with 24-hour format times too?

I like this forum much more now. Thank you.

I think it would be convenient to have the "breadcrumb trail" as you have on the top, on the bottom as well.

i.e. Index
       Main Menu
          jimworldlounge.com
             People Connector
                Members Lounge
                   New JimWorld and Gazette Features

I'd like to see that breadcrumb (besides being duplicated on the bottom which I think is a great idea) go back to a line that wraps.. ex:

Index > Main Menu > jimworldlounge.com > People Connector > Members Lounge > New JimWorld and Gazette Features

and, is there a reason that "jimworldlounge.com" is in there? Can it go away or be hidden? Kinda useless.

All I remember is trading links way back some years ago and now that section is gone... I hope perhaps this is brought back someday because to me, links are the core of the Internet and I miss this, sorely.

I particularly like the recently added (or maybe I only just noticed it): Index · Active Topics · New Discussions · My Topics · Inbox · Search

The "My Topics" link in particular makes a tidy way of seeing if any more posts have been made to the discussions you're participating in. Very nice.

The ability to edit one's own posts for a good period of time before one of those [Edited...] messages are inserted is very nice too.

Just noticed that the old inbox status is no longer at the top. Would be good if you could bring that one back to save having to check the inbox to see if theres any new mail. :)

Also forgot to mention that when replying to posts (800x600 res) If the reply goes into the scrollable area the right hand scrollbars disappear and you have to scroll with keyboard keys.

stevenjm, I noticed that the Inbox link at the top of the screen goes red and bold when there is new mail.

I have never seen the inbox link go red or bold. If it does, then it doesn't stay that way even if no messages are read.

It goes red if you have ANY unread messages. Once you read them, it goes back to normal.

great. thanks.
Now about that reply to threads form - as soon as you type in the first character (at 800x600 resolution) the scrollbars disapear (well almost. there is about a 4 pixel strip of scrollbar)
